5 Things To Do When You Are Moving House

Who Should I Inform When Moving House?

Employers: This may seem obvious but can often be overlooked. Inform your employers of your change of address so they can update your personal details. This is important for your payroll details.

Clubs / Societies: Remember that you need to cancel memberships to your local gyms and societies that you are no longer going to. This can be done either over the phone or when you visit them before you move.

It may be worth checking if you have any newsletter subscriptions and let the relevant company know the date you are moving to your new address so they can send these to your new home.

DVLA: Your driving license will need to be updated with your new address as soon as possible. This can be done on DVLAs website for free and you will receive a new license through the post.

Regular day-to-day bills: If there are any companies that provide a service that you pay regular bills for i.e. mobile phone contracts, home phone, TV service provider and broadband you need to inform them ASAP.

Moving Day Essentials Box

Think about some of the important everyday necessities and will benefit you when you first arrive at your new home. These are items that you would essentially use on an everyday basis and need before you even start unpacking your new home.

Below is a list to help you get started:

Cups or glass, plates and cutlery per person

Emergency first aid kit

iPad, iPod, radio to entertain you during the unpacking phase

Toiletries (hair shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrush and hand sanitiser, toilet paper)

Drinks

Snacks (in case you get hungry)

Change Your Locks

When it comes to changing locks, although this is not essential we would say as an advisory that it’s better to be safe than sorry. This should include all doors in your house, windows and exterior locks.

Store Your Valuables In A Safe Place

All valuables, confidential documents and any paperwork should be stored in a safe place. Ideally, this should be kept with you in the car on moving day.

Declutter Old Items

This is an excellent chance to have a clear out and remove any items that are no longer needed!  Use the three pile technique – one for items you want to keep, one for items to throw away, and one for stuff to donate or sell. Donate any things that are no longer in use or unnecessary to charity.

That is our 5 most important tips to think about when you are considering moving house. If you would like any other help or support in the home packing process, then consider looking through the different packing services that we offer.
